Timeline for Municipal Fiber Study Set

A community-based fiber-optic network could go before Falmouth Town Meeting as early as November 2020.

Courtney Bird, an organizer advocating for the fiber-optic network, provided selectmen with an update on a $50,000 feasibility study to determine the viability of such a network on Monday night, July 22.

The study, funded by the Economic Development & Industrial Corporation, has gone out to bid. The deadline for bidders is August 13. Mr. Bird expects the firm to conduct the six-month study will be selected in mid-September. The study is due by March 13, 2020. “This study, we feel, is a really important step forward,” he said, because it will give the town concrete answers regarding its options and the cost.

Early estimates place the cost of installing a community-based fiber-optic network at $30 to $60 million. Selectman Susan L. Moran asked if the study will identify a funding source. To read more of this article click here.
